it to me to become the Headbanger's Idol.

If I had heaps of time, I'd make a techno song for the contest. When's the deadline? Then I can re-use it for SimWorld or something so it's still considered work :P

well i can sing in the mic no problem but have music in the bg is a problem.....and why doesnt it ever work?

If you are playing guitar and singing into a computer mic at the same time, your problem is volume. Turn down the amp a little if it drowns out your voice, and have the amp farther from the mic than your... face. Turning down the various volumes on the sound manager can help as well, seeing as noise gets more sloppy the louder you set the computer mic.

TO make your sound a little higher quality (for any kind of recording), you want to go into your advanced audio properties... You can get to this window via:

Windows Sound Recorder--> Edit --> Audio Properties --> Sound Playback --> Advanced --> Performance

Now, from this window, crank both options up to the max. That's:

Hardware Acceleration: Full
Sample Rate Conversion Quality: Best

This will make your recording more clear, and remove some ugly sound deformations you might get.

Still having a problem? Okay. Follow this.

Windows Sound Recorder--> Edit --> Audio Properties --> Sound Recording --> Volume...

Now, for a computer mic, you want the "Microphone" option checked. Now, some cheaper mics are rather quiet, just in case, have your Microphone volume up at maximum. Now, click on "advanced" under the Microphone column.

This brings up another window, with Tone Controls, which aren't very important if you have a crappy mic. Mess with them how you would like if you can.

There is a "Other Controls" area in this window, and the only option it has is the "1 Mic Boost" check box. Make sure it is NOT CHECKED. This boosts the signal, and creates alot of static. It also makes Sound Recorder (and other programs) unable to handle the input from your mic.

Another problem that is common is a "flanger" effect to any recording you do. This is from any noise removal that is being done to your signal. Off-hand, I can't think of a way to turn off noise removal. I record with the Line In option... And don't ask about it yet, I'm making a whole pretty website on how to record high quality sound for almost no cost (like 3 dollars).

Also, pickups on electric guitars pick up all the crap from computer monitors and such (some lights make a horrible buzz), so try to get the mic a nice distance from the computer to minimize any buzz (or face the guitar a different direction).

AH. Sound recorder sucks for mixing. I would check http://www.snapfly.com / http://www.webattack.com for a freeware mixing console. You could also mix it in FL Studio.

It may be a tad tricky at first, but it works really well. Also, your sounds in Sound Recorder aren't working because they probably aren't the same length, you need to edit the two sounds in something like Audacity or SoundForge (Sound Recorder can erase things as well, but it's more confusing and not very accurate) so that the two sounds can fit together correctly... Without this editing, mixing it will be insane to do.
