Well, Here it is,a long post and poll on games, its that time where hardware you have is out dated, and you probably despratly need an upgrade, but lets take a moment to remember the classics of the FPS genre.

We all remember Duke, shrink ray,RPG, catchy phrases while giving naked chicks cash, not to mention kick ass theme music. This game runs well on anything, Im even wondering if I can install this game on my can opener for those really long to cook meals.....is Duke Nukem what "rocks" your past?

Ahh, Unreal series, The older one ran peachy on anything over 233 mhz, I remember the old days of playing this and pwning ugly aliens, after this came out the unreal tournament series came out,the first being ok and scaled to meet MANY machines max speed (including the whole 4 fps on my 66 mhz DX and the whole million on my newest computer) to the VERY latest which looks excessivly nice and probably needs over 600 mhz to play (Sorry cheapasses, that means that your 333 mhz celeron CPU just wont cut it anymore, buy a AMD :P) Is Unreal Series your Vote (post to vote for a specific one,if you vote any of em,click this box)

RAWR! The FIRST FPS I EVER played aside Castle Wolfenstine, ID Software a rebel company totally pwned ass in the making of this game and this game will continue to pwn all until the end of time, it seem that no matter how hard I try,i just can not get bored of doom, I mean there really was no plot, and all it was was a marine pointlessly stuffing rockets up imp ass like it was a thanksgiving turkey,AND what other game do you know that played the muffin man song AND had a dead bloody pink/white bunny rabbit?! DOOM takes my vote here, are you DOOMED like I am?

Well, HALF-LIFE, Need I say more, im sure EVERYONE in their right mind has played this,it took game of the year how many times? this game has more mods than a jessica simpson wanna be getting ready for a look alike contest..and seems to me,to be the most played game ever,Mods include TFC,DOD,AND the most bestest mod ever HT! Did Half-Life Pwn your life?

Well, the first game I ever really ended up beating by shit ass luck, ill admit the first time I played the orignal quake I had those white abomiable snowmen raping me the whole last level, I guess Shub-Niggrath just DIDNT want company, Too bad I did finilly end up RUNEin' her daythis game had a bit of plot and once again the single and multiplayer fragfest ID software provided feed my appatite for games, and hardware, I bought my 8 mb rage for this game :P my first card with more than 1 mb vram! w00t! This game was also the host of the first Team Fortress MOD yall so came to love....can ya dig in, or does another game provide your frag freakiness?

Serious Sam.....now THIS was a damn good Game, brought to you by GOD Games, there is TWO serious sams out to date AND a gold version, this game has a bit more plot,is based on mass killing and ALOT of comedy, they seem to take a bit from 3D Realms software (Duke Nukems maker) because everytime you start a new level, hes bound to pop off some smart ass commet as you rev the mini gun, the challange here is that stupid enemies in large numbers can,and sub sequently are hard to beat (the first game had the boss the size of the damn map and the second one, at the end scene before the boss on serious mode,i ended racking up OVER 1100 killsGreat use of the DX 8 settings and a nice rendering engine made this game run peachy on a 900 mhz duron with a radeon 7000,but on HQ at 1027x768 on a 1800mhz AMD xp/radeon 8500 it LOOKED TOTALLY AWSOME. textures got less blurry when you look at them close ( a pet peve of mine) Great game? are you serious this is your vote?

Dues Ex is rare, its like a RPG in a FPS, gain points get guns, augment your self with nano gagets, kinda was fun,but not totally a great game because it took me so long to get it to work without 2 fps.

quake II was quake 1s offspring of quake, open GL support was a first and the enimies actully ducked your rockets (GG smart AI!) Plus, you had that cool bally like thing that shot out of the BFG and nuked any room you were near, this made the game fun, specificlly when in Quad Damage Mode).

Quake III arena was the first ACTULLY good looking game Ive Seen, and although ALOT of games (soldier of fortune, RTCW..) were based on the Q3A engine, this game took crown of models (wow I was happy when I could run this at over 10 fps on my 8 mb ATi videocard (i actully managed to get around 40..w00t) it was nice while it lasted, but I think it kinda got dated. this game was MP based and lost touch real fast.

Theres your votes, and a little description, go ahead and post and I mean vote seriously, sorry sim, insane, otehrs, awsome child labor, ruby dance revulution, and return of the ruby dance revulution will not be counted.

Half-Life...

For the singular reason that it's the only game I play on a regular basis. Yes I still play the original even YEARS after I bought it. Coupled with the massive mod community for it means there's basically always something new. Started out on TFC mod, moved to CS, and now play those two regularly among a few others.

Quake, UT, and Doom can only be fun for so long. They're more of a quick fix for pent up agression. Sort of fun on LANs with people throughout the dorm though. I have my Quake 3 for the PS2 and UT and UT2003 for the PC. That's good enough for me for a few rounds.

Duke.... Good for its time. Something about killing alien pigs just doesn't carry the test of time IMO. I enjoyed the game more when it was played on LAN in the classroom after we got our programming finished for the day (Back in my Junior year of HS when I had QBASIC, Pascal, and C++ for 3/4ths of the year).

Dues Ex: "Eh." I played it a few years back and never really saw what the big deal was.

Never played Serious Sam.

I'm surprised that other games like Red Faction or Soldier of Fortune I/II weren't mentioned.

Red Faction was actually pretty good. The first game was a nice intro and introduced some new features like that geomod that I personally have never seen in a game like that before. The multiplayer (At least for the PS2) sucked horribly IMO. The single player game was great but I never got into it to the point I had to just buy the game. The 2nd game was a bit better than the first all around. It really didn't introduce too much to the series that wasn't really explored in the first game yet somehow I got into it slightly more. Still not enough to go beyond renting the game.

SoFI/II: Can't speak for the first game but the 2nd was pretty amazing. Great hit box and locational damage on all the models which should be an absolute MUST HAVE on all new and upcoming FPS games. The story wasn't all that bad, but the game itself seemed a bit short and a bit repetitive. It's more of a shoot, slight stealth, don't die type of game.

Wolfenstein 3D and RtCW: Good games. First game of course was just god like for the time and is still great for a bit of fun now. Finding the secrets and the treasures. Eating the various meals that were sometimes oddly scattered about in odd locations. Killing zombie Nazis. What is NOT to like?!
RtCW: Hmm... good graphics. Odd storyline (Like the first was any better?). It's definately a leap and a double bound passed the original. You still have plenty of Nazis to kill, but later on you're introduced to some weird mummies, demonic "hellspawn" creatures, etc... Kind of gets weird there. The game is extremely repetitive though. It really gets old killing the seemingly endless wave of cloned female catwomen Nazis all the damn time (In later levels). The game tries to break things up with some stealth levels, but that just fails miserably.

Doom 3: Been there, fragged that. Mainly about graphics, texture layers, all wrapped around a thin (already been told story) and creatures that look like things right out of "The Thing" (great movie however).
Half-Life 2: .... It's definately a step in the right direction. All I have to say :D

Fyre, this is the best poll I've seen on the boards :D

Duke3D:

I look back on Duke3d, and I remember some great times. Duke3D was my first shooter. Buying it in the store, I had no idea what to expect. I honestly thought it was going to be bad, but something drew me to it. No idea what. I still wonder what would have happened had I not picked it up that day. ;)

* The alien moonbase where you go past this round area and there's some nice mapping where you can look through these pillars to the moon, and see this amazing skymap. Lots of greap map moments

* Making maps with build and mods with the CFG files. Then playing these with my friends

* Changing enemy art into stick figures and evil buttons. hehe.

* Playing Rock (Alcatraz map) - one of the best duke3d maps ever. Lots of traps, interactive environments

* SECTOR EFFECTORS! - Besides sounding cool, and being arcane to use, duke3d entities were quite fun - also my first mapping experience. The duke3d printed mapping guide is one of the books I've ever read. So much inspiration in one book :D

* Exploring new areas. Duke3D just gave me this feeling while playing it. The touch of surprises, hidden areas, new weapons, and a 3d environment was just really impressive.

Quake2:

* Quake2 was a great game. I didn't like it as much as duke3d for some reason, but it was still a great game

* Mapping for quake2. I started with a prefab assembly program I bought, and eventually switched over to worldcraft. Didn't make lots of maps, and the maps I did make sucked, but playing those maps and being able to make sector over sector areas always impressed and entertained me.

* Jailbreak. I played this a lot, which is why some OSJB maps really resonate with me.

Half-Life

* I love Half-Life. Neither Half-Life nor Quake2 gives me the same feeling Duke3d did, but I think after I move beyond Half-Life, I will remember Half-Life fondly. Even now I distinctly remember mapping in HT. Playing Fyres, Eternals, Zyrex and the rests maps will be a memory I'll always have. But the future is open ended, and I don't see an end in sight of HT, though what form HT will take is never really known.

* Black mesa = tasty goodness

* HT Projects, even unfinished, were/are fun to work on :D

* Mods - AMOD, OSJB, and our other friends. TFC, and even CS I'll also always remember.

Closing:

I'd have to say that HL is probably my favorite... but so is Duke3d. But since HT didn't exist for Duke3D, I think I will remember HL as being better years later ;)

:( No one seems to really enjoy Quake II. But I did. I pwned everyone (well, the neighborhood kids my age). But regardless, we were stuck playing the Playstation version, and somehow I could accurately aim, something I haven't been able to do with a console shooter since. There's just something satisfactory about using a rail gun at long range against an unsuspecting friend, and getting to watch his expression as he dies (again).

We had to play splitscreen though, so naturally he'd cheat (but so would I...) so he knew where I was sniping from, and sometimes I'd still get him... God that was the good life....

Single player Quake II I borrowed from a friend a while ago, never could get past this one 'puzzle' involving darkly lit areas and crates though.

So I gave up. I never played online because I could never find the right patches, or a good server (this was after Quake IIs prime, so not many were up). I never knew which version to patch to... I'm grateful HL had a server browser built in and could patch itself (though, the self patching thing SUCKED...)
