Hehe, figured I might as well post this here in the off-chance a guest might read it.

Summary: We're looking for artists for a 2d game project to help us with tilesets. Early working demo of game is available.

Premise: I know there's a lot of mmorpg help wanted posts on these boards. I'd like to think that our mmorpg is at least slightly different from the norm. I hope you'll read this post with an open mind Now, moving onto the actual premise, and I don't want to give away everything, but the game is a cross between SNES console rpgs (think Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasty III) and The Sims Online.

As such, the primary focus of the game is on creating user levels/areas. Think of it as something like IRC or a mud, but with 2d graphics. If you're familiar with the mud scene, please think of it as a MUSH. Players create levels, and script objects in multiplayer.

There are also traditional mmorpg elements, like an economic system. Character advancement is done in a tech-tree skill type fashion. The skills also tie into the build system. IE, your build skill levels up the more you build, and you get access to more advanced commands, new tilesets, etc.

Status so far: We have a working windows client, and a cross-platform (windows/linux) server. (linux client is planned). The game server stores all information in a database server, which can also be accessed & modified by our PHP webpages. Players can move around and chat with other players. Players can also create their own zones via a webinterface, join the game, and load up their zone. From there they can enter "buildmode" where they can work on their zone with a default tileset. The engine supports multistory buildings/dungeons through height z-values. Player inventory is also implemented. We also have constructed an auto-patch system so the game client can be updated when patches are released, as well as an integrated account/character authorization system. We are still early in the production phases, and honestly, the code is about 15% done. However, the game is "playable," though far from our ideal. Obviously, we're working towards making the game closer to our ideal

Who we're looking for: 2D artists primarily. If you just want to test, you are also welcome to test with us

We've been using tilesets from rpgmaker games, however, the resolution is so low (in my experience 16x16), that ingame the tiles look very pixelated.

So we are looking for a 2d artist to create new tile art for us, in high resolution. Ideally, we want all the style the SNES art had, but in a higher resolution The artist has a lot of freedom, as our storyline is able to accommodate: medieval/magik, present-day, and futuristic locales.

As for financial compensation, I'm afraid at this point, we can offer very little. We hope any artists will be as excited as we are about this project, and will donate their time to our small project. It will not be until much later that we will be able to offer financial compensation.

Interested?: If you're interested, please get in contact with us! We're glad to answer your questions, and if you'd like to play, we can set you up as well

I looked at the tutorials, and while they're nice and dandy, they're mainly about theory. They don't actually show me how to draw. :(

hey, im new to the boards but i saw this and i can help you out. ive been searching the net for a 2D mmorpg, and since there are very few, i wanted to put my skills to use to make one. i cant program VB or C++, only RPGcode and HTML, but what i can do is draw and make tilesets. ive made tilesets for my own games, and if you contact me i can send you my work if you're interested in taking me on. i expect no "pay" if you decide on taking me on either. my email adrwss is towniesrgay@hotmail.com or rpglegacygames@hotmail.com, but i check towniesrgay@hotmail.com more often. i hope to hear from you.

I know a little bit about pre-rendered 3d art in the form of 2d artwork... Could work wonders for terrain. Thats what they did for Diablo 2 anyway.

That's a good start :)

We need higher-resolution tiles (50x50pixels), and they should ideally look really nice. (I know that's too vague, lol)
