I saw this earlier today, and thought it was kinda neat. Check out the links to the prior entries, as some of them are good. Check out the most recent invitation first ;)

WOW!
That's really cool how they can do that (I downloaded the Infekt demo).
Too bad you can't use PrintScreen (copy screen) to take screenshots of fullscreen text images, only Graphical ones, or I'd post a screenshot.

... What the hell is all that?

Walrii: Heh, text screenshots ;)

Zips: Taken from their page

Text mode demos offer unique challenges for the demo maker which play a very insignificant role in other kinds of demo competitions. First of all, resolution and color spaces are rather limited, forcing the demo authors to consider different forms of anti-aliasing and careful adjustment of contrast and color balance.

Basicly, take pretty graphical demos, and restrict them to text console windows. Very impressive if you ask me ;)

Ah, and for an explanation on demos, please see:

So basicly... It's a waste of time.

All you had to say.

If you're going to classify gfx demos as a waste of time, you also have to classify your own art as a waste of time.

A fitting paradox for paradox :P

Whereas I don't waste my time making text into pseudo crappy DOS graphics, I waste my time making objects into crappy windows graphics...

BIG DIFFERENCE!

Nice picture though :) The reflections are especially... reflective (in a good way) ;)

pretty...

I'll get 3DSM one of these days... maybe I'll even attempt to learn to use it!

Or you could use blender and/or povray. Though they're nowhere near 3dsm's quality (or ease of use (never thought you'd hear 3dsm called easier to use, did you? :P )) they're still excellent free tools, and in time, could rival 3dsm.

I rendered my video (http://editingarchive.com/downloads/433) in povray too ;)

I tried POV ray once. Cept, I only knew it for being able to develop 2d art, not movies. Can the new version do that (your movie was) ?

If not, wanna gimme your source that you used to take the ODE output and turn into POV... I wanna make my own physics demo.

POV ray for 2d?! I've never heard of such a thing. I've only ever seen it do 3d.

My source is nowhere near pretty, but if you want it, I can send it to you. You probably won't find it useful though as it's not modular at all, though it may help for you to see how I did it.

3D in 2D?

Are you perhaps blind in one eye Walrii?

You see 3d in 2d every day. Look at a video game :P

I meant that POV Ray could only do pictures, not movies (that I knew of).

What did you use to turn the hundreds of images into a movie?

Ah. I forget exactly, but it was some shareware program. I think certain versions of Adobe Premiere can do it too. Go to www.machinima.com and look for Part 4 of the Half Life machinima tutorial. It explains how to take lots of HL generated screenshots and compile them into a movie with a utility. The same procedure can be done with pov ray :)
