View Full Version : Hl Sdk Release "soon"
So the HL2 SDK is due to be released soon. The SDK will as far as I can tell not contain the sdk source code, so no code development can be done ahead of time. Of course, knowing valve, they will continually release new versions of the sdk, making you do massive ports of your existing code to their new version; with much pain.
Of course, in my opinion, you'd have to be crazy to develop a mod. Others can't play your game unless they have the game, you aren't allowed to sell your game, in fact, you're fairly limited rights-wise. Though you get some great starter content, it hurts you in the long-run. For those considering developing for HL2, check out free engines like crystal space and others.
Counterpoint? ;)

Counter-point? Pfff..... you took mine...
Sim, you ignorant slut. Mods are a great way to get a head start developing "games" if you are going into the computer programming or digital artist industry. It is an experience to work with an development team and learn many things you couldn't learn out of a "For Dummies" book. Also, it beats the hell out of always complaining "I could make a better game than this." Show it or shut it!

Crystal Space may be free and open-source, but HL has a MUCH bigger base of experienced users. When you're stuck, its easier to get help (so that you actually complete the mod).
If Crystal Space is open-source, does that mean you can't sell it? Some licenses allow you to sell the product, but the source must also accompany it... At least in HL you don't have to give away the source (and then have 50 different versions of your mod floating around, all incompatible with eachother).
Crystal Space is LGPL, meaning you do NOT have to distribute your source.
Countercounterpoint: AOL has a huge user base. Does that make it good? Is AOL a viable option because of its user base?
Certainly if you are a chat user, then you appreciate the large user base. But if you use AOL for it's "speed" then you are losing out.
Certainly HL has a good user base, but you lose some freedom by choosing to use it. While nowhere near HL, many opensource engines have good userbases as well. In fact, some are even being sponsored by big name graphics companies.
Point/Counterpoint/Point of Interest:
Design HT on HL2. This is not a request, this is a command! Even if it's not worked on anymore from what it's been at for HL1. Just port it over if you can. It'd be great to play in some of those levels with the HT madness :D.

Yeah, whats the scoop on HT2?
I was trying to think of making a HL2 mod that was EA related (and not HT, more of an inside joke) and couldn't come up with anything.
All I know is that I want to get in one of those jeeps, and hit some massive jumps (on levels designed by me).

... LOOPS!
... CORKSCREWS!
Make some kick ass "micro-machine"-esque maps... Large environments, large hills.... *drools*
Hehe, I'll see how hard it would be to port over HT, to HT2. I do have to admit, the name sounds downright cool ;)
As for micromachines, that would be cool too ;) Especially if you could eventually "levelup" and attach new parts to your world to expand it :D

Micromachines... yum!
I call dibs on that idea (even though its [Zips]'s).
HL2 won't have boats :( I wonder if corkscrews would be possible... probably an "acceleration pad" would be necessary. Grr
/me wants new computer capable of running HL2.

Uhm... You didn't hear this from me, but there are models and sounds for jet ski's (Waverunner things)...
YOU DIDN'T HEAR THAT FROM ME!
EDIT: There are normal boats actually... Uhm... A few that I remember.
REMEMBER: YOU DIDN'T HEAR THIS FROM ME!
