I'm not sure if this should go here, but we'll see what happens!

Any of you guys (or girls) out there play Guilty Gear or have even heard of it? If so, this is the thread for you!

I just got Guilty Gear XX: Slash, which is the newest revision of Guilty Gear XX: The Midnight Carnival. This game is probably one of the best 2D Fighters ever made, and it range from extremely fun to extremely frustrating (some of the missions that are in the game to unlock stuff make you want to rip your hair out). Other than that, the system itself is a really balanced system, and the sprites, unlike Capcom fighters, are high-res, and look fantastic.

If you're a fan of 2D Fighters and you own a PS2 or an X-box, definitely get Guilty Gear.

I've heard of it before, and I've heard good things. I generally dislike fighting games... except for Tekken 3, which I LOVE.

[This is indeed the right place for this, Dan :D]

I have to agree with Walrii on this one, I'm not much of a fighting game fan. In fact, I have come up with a TLA (three letter acronym) for fighting games in general: SFG, or Stupid Fighting Game. ;)

Still, I know RM and many others are a big fan of the genre, so don't take my word for it :P

Tekken 3 and Tekken Tag Tournament are probably the two best Tekken games out there.

As for Guilty Gear, it honestly is a great series, and I can't wait until they announce a new one, and not just another revision of XX.

I've played a few of the fighting games, the most recent being the soul caliber series. How does guilty gear hold up to Soul Caliber?

Hmmm, that's kinda tough, since Guilty Gear is 2D and Soul Caliber is 3D.

But I know as far as 3D fighting games go, Soul Caliber (the first one, anyway) is pure genius. That game just has so much stuff going for it, and the combat and the collision detection for it are superb.

Guilty Gear is probably the same thing, but only for the 2D realm. The game play is extremely balanced, though, and there are a multitude of ways to break out of certain things, so infinity combos that you'll see occur in broken games are pretty much impossible in Guilty Gear. Also, the cast of characters is hilarious and unique, as any good fighting game should possess. The AI can be extremely frustrating though, because of how tough opponents came be. Also, there are missions and stuff you can do to unlock bonus material, and I swear, Guilty Gear's developers must hate the people who play their game, because some of those missions are very tough.

I actually have to vouch for Guilty Gear. I generally hate fighting games... and that's not unwarranted; I have played many of them... but Guilty Gear is pure crystalline awesomeness.

It seems to me that the main entries in the 2D fighting universe: Street Fighter and the SNK games, are essentially caught up in nostalgia. They stick to sprites that haven't been updated for 15 years, and any amount of "newness" they throw into their games revolves around new "systems" that essentially act as a wrapper on top of the classic fighting system.

Guilty Gear (while becoming a bit of a sequel hound itself) has a much richer fighting system, replete with counter-attacks, cancels, and the ability to "roll your own" combos. As Dan mentioned, the series has very unique and entertaining characters; there are very few, if any, palette/head-swapped characters in Guilty Gear.

What makes the game so great to me, however, is it's frenetic pace and awesome accompanying rock music. Something akin to the feeling I get when playing a Sonic the Hedgehog game... but in a fighing game versus a platformer. That's actually a good analogy that I think most people would understand. Guilty Gear is to Street Fighter as Sonic is to Mario. It's just a faster fighter with more attitude.
