The only people who got the day off are federal employees. I wanted to celebrate the discovery of our continent, too! (In the best way: by sleeping in past noon :D)

A lot of schools get the day off for Columbus Day, but not mine...

I was having this discussion with my girlfriend this morning. She told me that it was Columbus Day. I told her that I didn't care and that I don't know why that's significant. She told me that it's the day that Columbus discovered America - October 12th (I think). I told her that it was not, in fact, October 12th, and that that makes no sense. Then she told me that it's one of those always on a certain day of the week sort of holidays.

I hate those holidays.

And after them were the vikings, THEN came the Europeans.

Basically, its a stupid holiday :)

It's the second Monday of October.

...Is the Canadian Thanksgiving when it is because of when Columbus day is or is this just some sort of coincidence? I can't say I know my Canadian history very well.

It's a coincidence. Columbus Day was announced as a holiday after Canadian Thanksgiving already existed.
...unless we picked the date because it was a Canadian holiday....

I don't care about this stupid holdiay...though I dod think it's funny when people celebrate "Native American Awareness" day. Since the arrival of Columbus was really the begining of the end for native americans.

Yeah, but arrogant Americans wouldn't change the holiday over simple facts.

Canadian Thanksgiving seems like a paradox... Thanksgiving is an American holiday? That's like saying European Fourth of July.

Duh! That's when Europe earned independence! :P
It would have to be planned on one of Canada's holidays, y'know, to complete the holiday-stealing triangle.

Man, you guys haven't been in many history classes, huh?

The 4th of July in Europe is when Europe earned it's independence from South America, in 17 B.C. And then Spain went and took down South America because it was more interesting to learn history that way.

(I was going to make more bogus history, but I got bored after getting that far. w00, running jokes into the ground.)

I had school Monday, too. Didn't even know it was supposed to be Columbus Day. (Er, actually it's tomorrow, or today [Lolomfg, Timezones.])

Wow, 17 B.C.? Their independence was way before American independence :P

They happened on the same day!

ElyCyan

Did they have turkeys in 17B.C.?

BrokenTripod

Uh, I don't think Turkeys were created until the Ottoman Empire collapsed. Because they were totally like: "Let's name ourselves after a non-existant animal!"

And then I believe it was Czechoslovakia that decided to genetically engineer the Turkey as a dumb animal to make fun of the Turkish.

Pyth: Of COURSE it was the same day. If we tried to remember all of the independence days in the world, our heads would explode. So, to make it easier, all the rebellions happened a few months before July, eventually declaring independence on July 4th. Much easier for all of us.

Shadowfox: You have no idea when the American independence was, do you? It was 14 H.9., Duhhh! That's not that long after 17 B.C.

Ahh. I see. Thanks for clearing all that up for us BrokenTripod.
