Alright, this has got to stop. Almost every time I close Internet exploder, I get this:

The instruction at "0x76d0884a" referenced memory at "0x017b4230". The memory could not be "read"

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program

I normally click on OK to kill it and continue my day. However, I got curious yesterday and clicked on CANCEL to debug it, and it brought up Microsoft Visual C++ Introductory Edition, which I got in a game programing tutorial.

I then got another pop-up that stated:

Unhandled exception in IEXPLORE.EXE (SHDOCVW.DLL): 0xC0000005: Access Violation.

However, that pop-up was in Microsoft Visual C++, not the desktop, as the first one was. What does all this mean? Is there any way to fix it?

It means that you're trying to access a library to which you do not have access. Wow... Windows does that now?

But in all seriousness, have you considered a browser that doesn't suck? Try Firefox. Or perhaps Opera. Heck, if this is an earlier version of IE, I'd almost recommend the new ver. 7. And if it is 7, then it sounds like there are some bugs left in the system.

Also, if your Internet Explorer is trying to access protected memory (which it sounds as though it might), you might consider running an anti-spyware program... there may be something fishy afoot.

Try upgrading to v7 and/or remove all browser BHO's (plugins).

Theres something with Internet Explorer 7 that won't let you connect to servers through Steam.

I suggest Firefox or something else. Lately I've been using an offshoot of Firefox called Flock. It's very similar to Firefox, and it kind of matches my current theme.

I've tried IE7, but when I tried to dl it, my computer was like "No, no, I'll have NONE of that!". And When I tried Firefox, it'd dl, and it'd install, but when I tried to run it, it said it couldn't find the DLL. By the way, I'm currently running IE5, and there's no doubt in my mind that there's some bad mojo 'up in my box'. I tried to get Yahoo! toolbar, but they switched to Norton Security and IE5 can't handle it. This is why I want to find my Windows 2000 Pro CD, completely wipe my HD of anything and everything and start over.

However... this is out of the question, as the CD has seemingly dissapeared into the endless depths of software and other computer related crap that is my basement. Thus, I'll try some other browser that 'doesn't suck', as Travis so kindly put it. Also, can you make any suggestions as to what anti-spyware software I should use?

I hear Linux is good :P

Seriously though, when I notice a problem the program I use is called 'HijackThis' to fix it.

I seem to have found something helpful. I first downloaded the Yahoo! Toolbar when they still had their own anti-spy somponent on it. After updating to the newer version, I was dismayed that I had replaced something that works with... Norton. However, I was looking in Add/Remove programs to uninstall Steam (Again!), and I found, what else, but Yahoo! Anti-spy. So I run it, and I found only two things: an adware, and a hijacker. I also found a bunch of tracking cookies, but I don't know which ones are malware and which aren't. So I got rid of these. Then I did a forum run, and ya know what? The same error came up again.

Clearly I need a new browser, or another test is needed. Perhaps even a better anti-spy.

Regarding cookies, I just have firefox remove all my cookies on browser exit. That makes tracking across sessions fairly hard ;)

Try upgrading to IE7 and see if that makes any difference.

I'll try to upgrade to Firefox again, and see what I can do about this missing/well hidden DLL. Otherwise, I'll try something else.

Try:

Spybot: Search and Destroy
HijackThis!
Ad-Aware SE Personal
Firefox
AVG Free

Try:

Spybot: Search and Destroy
HijackThis!
Ad-Aware SE Personal
Firefox
AVG Free

Spybot:SnD = Had it, dunno where it went.
HijackThis! = I'll look.
Ad-Aware SE Personal = See 'Spybot:SnD'.
Firefox = Tried it, still didn't work. Gonna try Flock.
AVG Free = See 'HijackThis!'.

EDIT: Today, I finally got IE6. I was going to get IE5.5, but it wouldn't cooperate, so I had to 'settle' for something better. So then my dad says "Why don't you get AT&T Yahoo! Online Protection?". "Huh... hadn't considered that..." says I. So that's what we did. We'll see if it helps at all. BTW, if you didn't already know, it comes with Anti-Spy, Anti-Virus, Pop-up blocker, parental controls, and e-mail protection. It was pretty good on my other computer, so it should help here. Time will tell.

Like a train in the ocean?

No, more like an Engi out of ammo.

EDIT: Hooray! Google put a thing on their site (being my hamepage, I would know that), and do you know what it was for? For people to download Firefox 2.0. So I did. And you know what? It actually worked (if a bit slowly)! Hooray for me!

*Ahem* Yes... hampage... quite. What I meant was 'homepage', not hamepage. But if you can give us a link to this hampage, I would appreciate it.

I believe there's been a misunderstanding. It's actually spelled ha-me-page, which is what someone says when they page themselves in a store because they're lost. It's very common in areas such as Nohwear, Naughtheer, and Insane's head.

Getting back to the original point of this thread, has anyone tried IE7? Any impressions? Is it more stable than IE6?

I had it for a day or so. It seemed alright, besides that problem with Steam...
