I found myself needing some free space today, so I went to clean up files. This time, I tried using a utility called WinDirStat (http://windirstat.info/). This freeware windows utility lets you easily identify files in a visual manner, helping you to quickly find the largest files or file groups on disk so you can determine if you still need them. For instance, it helped me find an old recycle bin from a previous windows installation that was using 3 gigabytes of space.

Here's a screenshot from their website:

Only if you download & run it. And then touch your monitor, which I don't recommend. :P

Well, I downloaded it, I tried it, and it seems to do it's job pretty well. So now I know what's taking up what space in my HD. What do I do with this information?

Any chance we could get this guy to mirror his files here? ;)

Delete what is unnessicary, backup what is, etc. There are many uses, I wish Windows did stuff like this already.

The program has a cool concept and all but it told me what I already know.
On my new Laptop
Greatest space is used by My Music 36 GIG
Anime is my second biggest user
Of the Anime I have on my Laptop only two series are in MKV

Maybe I will find it useful later. Ohh and it would be cool if you could make the colors pastel and eliminate the blinding glare dot.

Too bad I don't use windows any more... I wonder if there's anything like this for linux, I could run it on my terrabyte raid :P

Theres another program I used to use in Windows that is similar: TreeSize
It didn't do quite that much crazy graphics-izing, but it made pie graphs! Woo! Pie! :P

After you know what's using the space, you may be able to delete the larger files - for instance, you may have forgotten you had a game installed which you were no longer playing (as I did).

RM: I recall the author mentioning on their site that it was inspired by a KDE utility?
