I've started work on a FPS project. It'll use the CUBE2 engine, and be a tactical shooter (i.e. counter-strike) versus mindless rampaging (i.e. quake). I believe I can get some really GOOD models from some counter-strike model replacement archives that provide high-poly model replacements such as this one:
http://www.counter-strike-dl.com/downloads/source/images2/csdl_source_616t.jpg
Right now I'm familiarizing myself with the current source codes and trying to secure models - since they come in .vtx format, they can't even be tested until I get the source models. Questions? Comments? Suggestions?
Oh, right. Forgot to mention... this project "started" when I was using Linux for a long time and couldn't get Counter-Strike to work on it. I realized that there are no tactical shooters for Linux. So I'm now developing a cross-platform game as a college project.

Sounds good. If CUBE2 has a following (which it does), there are tutorials on modding it. Just a simple search on their site shows they have a wiki (http://cube.wikispaces.com/). That would be a good place to start.
As for the VTX files, try:
Modifying a Source Model in Maya (http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Modifying_a_Source_Model_in_Maya)
[Remember not to doublepost (http://forums.editingarchive.com/showthread.php?t=1241). Thanks :)]
Good luck with the project :)

Just discovered today that it's actually .mdl format, which is proprietary to half-life as well. So, I downloaded a decompiler for it as well as two different model viewers... both model viewers crash when I try to open the model, and so does the decompiler :( I think Jesus is to blame for this one.

As you could probably tell from the front page, I released an alpha version a couple days ago and a subsequent patch for it (bad error, haha). Expect patches over the next few days :)

I just realized that Arghvark (who was around a bit in the EA community and which some of us know in real life) has been / was / is? working on a Counter-strike ish total conversion using the Cube engine called AssaultCube.
http://assault.cubers.net/
You can get it for Windows, Linux, or OSX.
Their site says: "Set in a realistic looking environment, as far as that´s possible with this engine, while gameplay stays fast and arcade. This game is all about team oriented multiplayer fun."
So, you might want to consider joining their efforts or, maybe just taking their code and making it more tactical since they focus on fast gameplay. At the least, you could use the maps / textures / models (assuming the licenses are compatible which, I think it should all be open source).
From http://assault.cubers.net/forum/comments.php?DiscussionID=133&page=1#Item_0
It seems a LOT of people here are very confused as to what AssaultCube's (and Sauerbraten's) license actually is.
I will make a vague attempt to spell it out in simpler terms.
The source code, and ONLY the source code (ONLY the files in config/ and source/src/) are under the Zlib license.
This means you may reuse that code, but you may NOT claim you wrote it, or remove our copyright notice from
the code. source/enet also carries a similar MIT-style license, that basically just says don't remove the copyright notice,
so same difference.
EVERYTHING ELSE IS UNDER *DIFFERENT* LICENSES THAT, IN GENERAL, DO *NOT* GIVE YOU THE RIGHT TO FREELY REUSE THEM.
The models, the textures, the maps, and whatever other media. Look in docs/package_copyrights.txt for more clarification.
If there is a license.txt or readme.txt within a specific directory that gives other licensing terms, then those licensing terms
apply ONLY to the files within that directory and its sub-directories. If some directory does not carry any explicit licensing
terms, or it is not said in docs/package_copyrights.txt what rights apply to that directory, then you must assume you do NOT
have the right to redistribute those files at all, except as part of the entire AssaultCube distribution. SOME files within AssaultCube
may actually be reused, but ONLY if the license attached to those files EXPLICITLY says so.
The entire AssaultCube package MAY be redistributed, however, some of the files within it carry a "FREE FOR NON-COMMERCIAL
USE" clause. What this means is, you can NOT sell the AssaultCube distribution for profit, or this would violate
the individual licenses, UNLESS YOU REPLACE all those files.

Well guys, I had been meaning to post this earlier but didn't really feel up to it... I have ceased work on this project, whomever wasn't informed. I was really just doing it to benefit the community and since I have since been REMOVED from said community, there's really no point in continuing on. I obviously earned no respect.

I respected you...more than I respect most people anyways. And since you aren't here anymore I'll be uploading any maps I make to EA.

Well it's very difficult when I don't have a way to communicate with testers in realtime or set anything up. I just feel so... disconnected and lost. Out of place. Homeless. Rejected.
