I need some opinions for this one, and will hopefully not end up like the last 3 threads I made a year back. I have an Xbox that I tuned up with a minimal linux OS, (that has already proven to run an 8-slot CS 1.6 server) for the purpose of an always-on game server. The problem is, what game?
I would prefer a steam-based game, for I already have a base of that installed. The choices are in the poll, and the purpose of the server is for custom maps made by frequent players and requests. ( Like Sim's TFC server.)
I would appreciate it if you could post why you chose what game you did. As soon as enough votes have been collected, I will set to work.

I went for GMod 10, because with all the gamemodes available for it, you can pretty much play all the other games on it anyway.

The only one of those that I can play on my computer is CS 1.6. Occasionally, I get on my brother's computer to play other stuff. TF2 and CS:S are both cool with me, but I can't be expected to play often.

I want the smiley face option. Which game is that?

I voted for TF2. We need an Archive TF2 server, but I'm pretty sure our current hardware won't be able to handle it. I'll probably do a stress test later in the week during a low activity time to see what happens ;)

On the other hand, I know we definitely couldn't handle the crazy GMOD 10 contraptions, but would love to have a community server for that, too. But more people are interested in TF2 than GMOD, so...

PS: The Archive does not condone modification of Microsoft hardware. Use at your own risk, etc :P

This is a cool idea Sim, but just keep in mind that if EA were to get a TF2 server right away it would lack the unique elements that our TFC server currently has. Think of what makes it up: a plethora of custom maps, and a number of cool mods. Neither of those things are currently available for TF2, so it wouldn't hurt to wait if necessary.

It's supposed to be HL2: DM, which is a death match version of HL2. Basically, all the guns from HL2, with two teams fighting each other. I don't think there are any objectives other than to kill the opponents. You can either be the Combine dudes, or the resistance team (I can't remember what they call themselves).

Right. I was just pointing out in my roundabout way that people need to preview their posts and look into the "Disable smilies in text" option underneath the editing box - in "Additional Options"

Definitely. I am thinking (dreaming? :P) of options where the TFC server stays up in addition to another server. A GMOD server would rox, but most people seem interested in TF2 -- even though no custom maps seem to exist for it yet.

Woo, 2 months later I finally have some progress. Luckily, I'm off of the Xbox and onto a real computer that I have hidden in my closet. It's running Debian and has the TF2 server already installed on it, so I just need to get my network settings correct and then we can experience what will hopefully not be 100% pure organic lag on a stick dipped in lame with sadness sprinkles on top. NOT yummy.

In your closet? It won't overheat in there, especially when summer comes back around?

I'm still pretty confident though, considering that when I was still a wee Bob, I kept my old 95 box in there on 24/7 until I "gave" it away. Kind of hysterical to look at, but it really scared my family members whenever they found me hiding in a closet. :P

Let us know when it's up and we can try it out! :)
