I would say Issac Asimov but you might not like that so . . . I will instead say Dirk Gently Holistic Detective by Douglas Adams.

Yea but... I've already seen the movie, so I already know what happens.

Okay, Neo... this is simple. 1) Listen to Snif. Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency FTW 2) Listen to me. Artemis Fowl. Better than Harry Potter... and you haven't seen a movie of it. Go. Now. Read.

Dirk Gently is cool, but not one of my favorite books simply because I think Douglas Adams wrote himself into a hole a bunch of times (much like some of the later Hitchhiker's books).
Go read Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke, The Watchmen by Alan Moore, The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien (If you haven't already), Everything's Eventual by Stephen King and then round it off with Complete Stories and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe. That'll make you feel all good inside.
Also, listen to Travis because he has a good head on his shoulders.

This coming from the user with the name "Insane".
Seriously though, the Artemis Fowl books are pretty fantastic.

Spoiler concerning MEGASPOILER
It's hard to write yourself into a bigger hole than when you kill off all the main characters in one book and have to do a sequel

Yeah, exactly Sim. By no means is it a bad book, or even an "just average" book.
